Benjy Sachs

Benjy Sachs is a senior from Deerfield High School, where he serves as Co-president of the massive 230-member DECA chapter, and is proud to be Illinois DECA’s VP of Philanthropy. He first got a taste of DECA his freshman year when he placed in the Top 10 at State for his Principles roleplay. He was thrilled to attend ICDC the next two years, last year placing 4th in Marketing Management Series. He has been a chapter officer for three years, introducing new students to DECA and preparing members for their role play competitions. Seeing the State Action Team unite Illinois DECA and organize the state conference every year inspired him to apply for state office.
Benjy’s favorite DECA experiences include hearing guest speakers talk to his chapter, searching for authentic fried chicken restaurants during ICDC in Atlanta, and meeting new people from across the state at the Illinois Career Development Conference. His hope is that every Illinois member has the chance to make similar memories this coming year.
Benjy loves to stay involved in his school and community through different service projects. As Co-president of Student Council, he is constantly engaged in student-led efforts in organizing student activities, fundraising, and volunteering. In his junior year, he co-chaired his high school’s annual philanthropy drive, raising $145,000 for early detection pancreatic cancer research. Benjy can also be found debating the finer points of foreign policy in Model UN, tutoring students in English and Math in his school’s Academic Resource Center, putting his knowledge of obscure trivia to work in Scholastic Bowl, or attempting to be funny when writing articles for his school’s satire magazine, The Flipside. At other times, he fulfills his love of cardio and ellipses by running long distance events on the Track team.

During the summer, Benjy has interned at a political campaign and worked as a writer for a healthcare journal, where he gained invaluable business knowledge. He loves to train for and compete in triathlons with his friends. He hopes to one day complete an Ironman triathlon. He also spends his summers playing tennis and going to concerts.

In his free time, Benjy enjoys drinking copious amounts of coffee, listening to Miles Davis, watching soccer, and reading anything by David Foster Wallace or Kurt Vonnegut. He also loves watching movies, especially his favorite Forest Gump, and is always looking for new recommendations. His favorite TV show is Mad Men, which combines his affinities for marketing and alliteration in one. His favorite word in the English language is “defenestrate,” which means to throw someone out the window.

Benjy looks forward to being a part of the Illinois State Action Team this year and is eager to connect with DECA members and help shape the course of the state organization. His goals for the year include further developing Illinois DECA’s online presence, increasing chapters’ philanthropic efforts, and taking countless selfies with DECA members.
